Chris, this is one of the first posts I wrote on my blog. It was my way of processing a lot of hurt and anger toward the church that I was feeling at the time. When I wrote this, I was feeling burned by my home church and also by the church I had just left behind.

I openly tell people that I have a love/hate relationship with the church, and I still get really frustrated with territorial pastors and legalistic congregations. So, it's a bit of a miracle that I'm pastor, let alone still involved in a local church.

That being said, I have a soft spot for those who have been hurt and walked away. I completely understand the reasons why, and it's interesting to learn that you had this experience. Though, I'm glad you started a home church and are considering getting into a missional community.

Kent,

This looks like one of your old blogs from years ago. I just wanted to say that I appreciate your honesty. I too went thru those thoughts and feeling . . . but unlike your decision ... I chose to leave my postion of pastor and left the church. Since then we have started and been involved in a local home church. Now we are praying about making the step in a missional community.

Travis, I appreciate and agree with your comments. This post was a portrayal of my spiritual and emotional journey with the church through the years and I figured that others would share that experience and sentiment with me, and your comments once again confirm that. So, thanks brother for reading and responding to it!

Kent,
This is a phenomenal writing. You pushed all the right buttons to deconstruct the church and pushed the right button to correct it...that no matter how brutally self-consumed the church can get, that Jesus loves the church despite her flaws. As Derek Webb's song said, "If you love me you will love the Church."

I don't go here, but the only variable is the assumption that all the consumeristic power player church is even the church. That is the only thing that could undercut this sentiment. I know of a couple people at least that think the church has become so far from its intent, that its not even the church. This is referring to the powerful consumeristic church.

I wouldn't agree with that, because I know these well meaning consumers and their well meaning power pastors and elders. I have been among them all and I know that they are trying to know and love God. There are structures and mentalities that are definitely contradicting some Biblical teaching, but I could never join the most extreme people in saying, "it no longer qualifies as the church."

So, extreme variable considered and all, I agree and am thankful for what you shared in your post. Thank you!

Wow. My pastor just sent out an email to our congregation, and I quote,
"Do you have a business that you'd like others in the church to know about?(Bring a business card!)"

Pray for a small church in WV. I will continue going to worship. Your testimony hit home.

God bless!
